touchedscreens
diptych, etchings on cotton paper
20 x 60cm each, 2019
Stock imagery hands caress electronically LCD-lit devices and hint at the spiritual flavour of transcendence that permeates their advertised allure in the tiny inset etchings.
touchedscreens plays on a contrast of contemporary mass communication with the aesthetic of earlier forms of printmaking. In this diptych, a window-like pairing combines the aspirational symbolism of stock imagery with the transcendental aesthetic of Rembrandt-era etchings and later mezzotints, in which the portrayal of light within a chiaroscuro mono-tonality frequently carried overtones of enlightenment and the transformative.
